about

The first recorded songs for the Somber Wurlitzer happened during the summer of 2002 while on tour with The Arthurs. We were invited back to Portland by Martyn of The Minders and recorded two new songs at his home studio. It happened during an unusual heat-wave and it felt like we were tracking in New Orleans, very sticky, very humid. Thank God for basements. Everything was recorded the first day and roughly mixed the following day.

We left the songs in the gracious ear of Martyn and Portland to add any finishing touches. The mixes came out very sixties and simple, perfect for a 7" single. The following year, it was released in a limited quantity by Dirigeable records. These songs were later re-recorded for cohesive reasons, but the original versions that appear on this single are held in a warm place, because they were our first glimpse of what was to come.

Hailing from the burghs of Long Beach, Greater California is the perfect blend of velvety 60’s style folk psychedelia, often inspired by the works of Nick Drake, R.E.M. and the Byrds.
